The Edge of the World

This year for my birthday we decided to finally go to the top of the Alpe di Seceda, located on the sunny side of Val Gardena on the Dolomites, which is part of the Unesco World Heritage. This destination has been on my mind for years and I finally organized a vacation to make this journey possible. I have to admit that I was inspired by the many beautiful images on Instagram. I was very excited to finally be able to see it with my own eyes and have the chance to photograph it.

There are many ways to arrive to the Seceda top. We decided for the easiest way because of Isabella so we took the cableway from Ortisei. We arrived super early in the morning (it opens at 8.30 am). It takes about 30 minutes to get to the top. After the first cableway there is a second one that is manually driven and feels like it skims the wall of the mountain going up (see image). I'm afraid of heights so the ride was not stress free for me but Isabella seemed pefectly comfortable.

Once you reach the top, the view is amazing and simply takes your breath away so it's totally worth it. At this point you are at a height of 2500 meters so the temperature is a bit cooler especially if it’s a cloudy day. The weather was quite variable and the light kept changing but I was able to catch the clouds breeze over the peeks like cotton candy. There are many hike trails to choose from and you can easily spend the entire day exploring what literally looks like the edge of the world.  We left when we say the dark clouds coming in but made it to the cable car before it started raining.

Next time I want to stay overnight and take pictures of the Seceda at dawn.
